RACE START DECEMBER 12TH 2024:

Our Charities

We are rowing for two extraordinary charities: star* scheme and the Mustard Tree – both are relatively small and yet make an enormous difference to the people they serve; both are dear to the hearts of the crew members.

Since we are personally funding our participation in this event,

100% OF ALL FUNDS RAISED WILL GO TO THESE TWO CHARITIES

Star Scheme

In 2020, Dan Wooler, along with an inspired group from Chew Valley RFC, founded the star* scheme – a unique and innovative charity that trains junior rugby coaches and club volunteers in the world of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences), or childhood traumas. Through partnering with the junior rugby clubs, local schools and the Premiership rugby community foundations, star* provides a safe and nurturing space for the young people and their families to integrate and develop resilience that is literally life-altering. star* is currently impacting the lives of over 200 young people and their families across the UK and we expect that to increase to over 600 young people by the end of the 2023/24 season.

Please watch one or more of the short videos below to get a sense of the difference star* makes:

Mustard Tree Cancer Support Centre

The Mustard Tree cancer support centre in Plymouth stands as a beacon of hope and healing for anyone navigating the fear and tumult of a cancer diagnosis. Located at Derriford hospital in Plymouth it holds, at it’s heart a dedicated team of Macmillan professionals and volunteers who offer compassion and expertise at every interaction. As a cancer support charity, its doors are open wide to anyone affected by this relentless disease, extending its reach to patients, family and friends alike.

When Paul was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2019 the Mustard Tree became more than just a place of support it became a sanctuary for him and his family during their darkest days. Its staff and volunteers provided not only practical assistance but also emotional support, offering a comforting and empathetic presence when it was needed most and at times becoming an absolute lifeline. Thankfully Paul is now cancer free. He has however, harboured a strong desire to find a way to repay the centre for the vital support they offered both during and after his illness. When the opportunity arose to take on this challenge, the way forward was clear.

Sadly there are few people that have not been affected in some way by cancer; either their own diagnosis or that of a loved one, and during that journey The Mustard Tree will have likely played a vital role. It becomes a fundamental source of support for people during the very darkest of times reminding them that they are not alone at a time that can feel the very loneliest. And in the spirit of this challenge it reminds us that in the face of adversity, we are stronger together.

100% OF WHAT WE RAISE WILL GO TO THE DESIGNATED CHARITIES!

SO, HOW CAN YOU HELP SUPPORT US?
